Brain Rot, Mental Overload & Dopamine Burnout: Is Technology Rewiring Our Mental Health

Brain Rot, Mental Overload & Dopamine Burnout: Is Technology Rewiring Our Mental Health?

Is technology rewiring our mental health?

For some weekends, the time and days off are spent doing things with family, friends or quality time alone with some hobbies or catching up on some TV, reading, etc.

But nowadays it’s common to find yourself laying down for hours just scrolling through short-form content. It can be entertaining but it’s been training our brains to be more used to shorter and shorter videos and content.

And it’s been harder to read, pay attention to movies and shows.

Why is that?

Brain rot and bad content

Braun rot is a term frequently used to describe bad content on social media. Usually it is low quality content made quickly and easily, it is also often made to capture attention as quickly as possible and can be very overstimulating. It is also used to describe low quality children’s content that is made to trend. Creators that make this content often repost it plenty of times or reuse the same material.

In general, it is content made without meaning that is meant to gain as many views as possible. Low quality and low effort content has become very common on social media, and it is easy to get lost in a sea of it.

It contributes to low attention spans or decreasing attention spans.

When people scroll endlessly, bad content is hard to avoid. It is exhausting to constantly see but it is easy to fall into the trap of endless scrolling.

Dopamine overload

Social media is easy to scroll through and look at. It is easy to feel a dopamine rush from scrolling. You may see a couple bad videos, and then a really funny one so you keep scrolling. It is instant gratification.

This instant gratification leads to a dopamine overload. And we can get easily addicted to it which circles back to lowered attention spans for longer and maybe even more meaningful content and activities to do.

Signs of digital burnout

Signs of digital burnout include

  • lowered attention span

  • Having hard time focusing on other tasks or activities

  • Feeling exhausted after looking at social media or our phones

  • Having a hard time doing something else

What can I do?

It may be harder to just unplug and pick up old hobbies but a few things can lead to improvements.

A few things to consider are:

  • Setting time limits through phone settings

  • Setting mental time limits for yourself, starting with shorter limits to longer ones over time

  • Finding another hobby that you believe will interest you

  • Trying exercising or physical activity

  • Listening to music while doing other things

  • Not checking social media after waking up

  • Setting notifications limits or turning them off for less important apps

But what if I need more help?

Technology itself is not inherently bad. Social media, phones, and digital platforms can help us stay connected, learn new things, and even find support. But when constant stimulation, endless scrolling, and instant gratification begin affecting our focus, mood, motivation, sleep, or emotional well-being, it may be a sign that your mind and nervous system need a reset.
