Experiencing intrusive thoughts or constant worry after having a baby? Learn about postpartum anxiety and how therapy can help.

If you’ve found yourself thinking:
- “What if something happens to my baby?”
- “Why can’t I stop worrying?”
- “Why am I having these thoughts?”
You are not alone—and you are not a bad mother.
What is Postpartum Anxiety?
Postpartum anxiety is more common than many people realize. It can show up as:
- Constant worry or fear
- Feelings of dread
- Racing thoughts
- Difficulty relaxing
- Physical symptoms (heart racing, tension, and also nausea)
What About Intrusive Thoughts?

Some moms experience intrusive thoughts, including:
- Fear of harm coming to the baby
- Fear of potential accidents
- Unwanted or distressing images
- Thoughts that feel out of character
These thoughts are:
✔ Unwanted
✔ Distressing
✔ Not a reflection of who you are
Many mothers silently struggle because they are afraid to talk about it.
When It May Be OCD
If thoughts feel repetitive, distressing, and hard to control, it may be related to: Postpartum OCD
Postpartum OCD can show through the symptoms mentioned above. Like other types of OCD, it is constant worry and fear, and also checking. It may be constant worry or rumination from harming the baby or fear that harm may come to the child. Which leads to constant checking and compulsions relating to preventing harm.
Intrusive thoughts may feel very real and distressing but it is possible to seek help.
